The amount of food additives in our groceries is at an all-time high. Even though we are aware of this fact, it’s not that easy to get an overview of what these additives and preservatives are and why you should avoid them. We’ve collected the most important facts and useful information for you and which alternatives are available.
Avoid artificial sweeteners.
Diet drinks are luring but, because they’re low in calories, it doesn’t mean that they’re healthier. Instead of drinking diet sodas or sugar-free lemonades, go for homemade teas sweetened with honey. And beware! These additives are also found in fruit-juices and fruit drinks. Go for the healthier alternative and juice fruits yourself. That way, you make sure that you get all vitamins without the harmful additives.
Avoid monosodium glutamate.
Of course, fast and convenient foods are a convenient solution when you’re busy, but bear in mind that most of them contain huge amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG). Almost every packaged food contains MSG which is why it’s probably the food additive that is the most difficult to avoid. Try to buy fresh, unpackaged products for easy-to-prepare meals to avoid as much MSG as possible, even when you’re in a hurry.
Avoid hydrogenated oils.
What would a movie night be without crisps and crackers or sweets? As delicious as it is to have a little salty or sweet snack from time to time, the unhealthier it is. The hydrogenated oils they contain are transformed into trans-fat, which is the kind of fat that potentially causes heart diseases. If you crave a little snack during a movie evening, go for healthier alternatives like nuts or dried fruits – they not only taste delicious, they are also a source of healthy nutrients.
Avoid sodium nitrate/sodium nitrite.
A hot dog on the go is, of course, sometimes a delicious little snack when you’re hungry. But did you know that sodium nitrite and nitrate are used as preservatives in most processed meat? To avoid meat that contains sodium nitrate, buy locally from organic farms. Best of all, meat from organic farms is not only healthier but also tastes better.
The better you treat your food, the better you treat yourself.
